Announced a call for papers for 5th international conference on Gender and Communication (GENDERCOM)

The new GENDERCOM Congress edition will take place on March 19th and 20th at the University of Seville. Organizers highlight that this conference has become an international meeting eagerly awaited by researchers in gender studies.  The proposals may be sent until February 23rd, 2020 to the following email: info@gendercom.com.

Denialism of gender-based violence is on the rise. We are witnessing a political moment in which superior values are invoked in order to question women’s freedom to decide on situations that concern themselves. Homophobia continues to appear in the language, as much as machismo. There is a formal recognition of sexual diversity but an evident discrimination towards those who decide to express it. In the media, reifying images of feminine beauty continue to predominate, while dominant models of masculinity prevail.

Among the youngest, the consumption of pornography has increased, and new forms of sexual harassment are taking place. Communication is expressed both in traditional media and in the complex and dynamic digital environment; social networks that have become a permanent mirror with which different individuals and groups identify. Today, more than ever, it is convenient to reflect on gender equality in communication; on educational, legal and communicative proposals that contribute to improving the quality of life, coexistence.

Given the cross-cutting nature of the debate on gender identities, the conference invites  welcome papers or communications with interdisciplinary perspectives that address any issue related to the following topics:

  • Gender identities, violence and inequality among young people.
  • Gender discrimination in the media narratives.
  • Social networks and forms of gender-based violence.
  • Educational proposals to improve communication.
  • Ethical and legal analysis around gender equality and gender-based violence.
  • Other arguments that may be of interest for sharing research projects and for finding colleagues with whom to promote possible collaborations.
